((Intro post continuing from Aniki's bio))
She really hadn't done anything wrong.
Okay, so she slept on the roof of the city's mayor...
But there really hadn't been any need for all of that clamor and shouting. She meant no harm. How was she supposed to know that that wasn't allowed?
Of course, perhaps she shouldn't have started running. Then she wouldn't have knocked that guard into the fruitstand. Then maybe they wouldn't have gotten so mad at her.
It was how she looked. She knew it. What with the eye patch and the ragged clothes...she was different from everyone else. She felt it. They felt it.
That's why they chased her. Chased her out into the field until she thought she'd collapse. It was when she realized that she was running through grass that reached her thighs that she smiled in relief.
Whipping down a hill, the young Sheikah stopped running, and instead, ducked down, her hand hovering near her tomahawk.
The guards who had been chasing her appeared at the top of the hill, their faces darkened by their visors and the morning sun behind them. The taller one, with the plume sticking out of his helmet, turned his head in a full sweep. Panting, his partner, apparently one of lower rank, asked him breathlessly, "Where'd she go, sir?"
The tall soldier didn't answer. He was looking down the hill where Aniki was hiding. Twice his eyes swept over the spot where she layed. The girl held her breath.
"...Sir?"
"She's here. She's close enough for her to hear me. If we poked around this grass long enough we'd find her. But then we'd probably have to fight her. Riff-raff like her don't go down without a struggle."
"Um...y-yes sir."
"But tell me, Toreck. Where does our jurisdiction end?"
"Um...what sir?"
The tall soldier looked at his partner, his polished armor clanging as he turned slightly. "I said, where does our jurisdiction end?"
The younger soldier glanced over his shoulder. "Uh..." he pointed weakly, "There...where the bridge is sir."
"We crossed that bridge, isn't that right?"
"...Why, yes sir."
"So we're out of jurisdiction."
"But...But sir, won't General Gurick be displeased if--?"
"Toreck, if we proceed to go after this girl, not only will we be spending the rest of the day at her sentencing, but we'll have to file reports and listen to General Gurick rant about his justice. And you wanna know what the worst part of it all will be?"
"...Uh...w-what sir?"
"I'll get my armor scratched. I just bought this last week, I won't waste it on vermin like that girl. So you wanna know what we'll tell the General, Toreck?"
"What sir?"
"She got away."
"...Sir?"
"She got away and we couldn't find her. That's what we'll tell the General."
"Very well, sir."
The tall soldier turned his head toward the grass. "And if the girl comes back, Toreck...we'll get her!" the soldier said this loudly, and Aniki grit her teeth.
Without another word the two soldiers walked out of sight, and the Sheikah listened to their armor clanging farther and farther into the distance before she allowed herself to release the breath of air she had been holding.
